THE PURPLE BOOK OF ITHILIANA

Updated: May 2007

This page has links which lead to a number of fics, mostly completed ones. With the new tagging program (OK not so new now!), I've stopped updating the link page and will be shifting to tags in my copious spare time.

WARNINGS:
FPS Interspecies & Manslash, Dark Fics
RPS Bondage/Domination/Submission
Adult content in both genres
Dark Fics
Not intended for anyone under legal age of adulthood.

Standing Offer

I write long multi-part fics mostly, all linked below, but
I am also quite happy to send a current Word file to anyone who
would like to read in that format, especially those coming in after
say, oh, part 69 ;> Just email me at
ithiliana13 AT yahoo DOT com if you wish an e-copy!

The Lord of the Rings FPS AU

Most of my FPS is AU because I have two obsessions: Boromir must live. Frodo and Faramir must be together. So these fics tend to have happier endings than Tolkien's work. These fics draw on both bookverse and movieverse (blend, add water, and stir).

The Lord of the Rings FPS Dark or Dark Themes AU

Recently, I have become interested in dark elements in Tolkien's universe. These stories which are still FPS and AU are therefore different than my other AU fics because someone takes the Ring. So far, I've written Boromir and Aragorn. There is a planned Faramir in the future. These stories have either tragic or ambiguous endings. They also draw on both bookverse and movieverse.

The Lord of the Rings RPS Behind the Scenes

Since I write RPS, I obviously don't consider it illegal (well no more than FPS snicker) OR immoral OR an invasion of "real" people's privacy. "My thoughts on RPS as Role Playing Slash can be read here.

Started out David/Elijah, mostly PG-13, then mutated to David/Viggo/Sean, with some Andy thrown in. At that point, NC-17 is the rule, with major Bondage & Dom/Sub elements. Also very very long. And looks to be neverending. Started in Wellington during filming, then David and Sean and Viggo started having vacations (England and Idaho). Then they went back to Wellington for a premier. Which so far they haven't gotten to see. *So* not my fault. I blame Sean.

Picked up from fandom_wank, hahahaha!

Explaining what you MEAN and that your readers are rong rong rong rong is recipe for wank online, and a total waste of time in class.

Too bad this has too much explicit sex for me to feel at ease recommending my students read!

Because NOTHING embodies this season like checking the immigrant status of children before giving a donated toy to them for CHRISTMAS. STory about Houston charitable (HAH) groups gacked from Shakesville.

Insert obligator reference to no room at the inn, suffer the little children, all that stuff that I learned before stomping away from institutionalized religion.

Call For Papers-Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Book collection of Academic writings

In the fall of 1988, on a small public access channel, KTMA, in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area of Minnesota, a bizarre show appeared. It featured two hand-made, robot appearing puppets and a man who was watching a movie and making comments to the screen. Little did its creator, Joel Hodgson, know that he had created a world-wide, popular culture phenomenon known as Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST). The show lasted ten seasons, and spawned a theatrical feature film. Twenty years later, the show still has fans the world over. The show has received a coveted Peabody Award for excellence, and was nominated for an Emmy Watching episodes of the show today, one still has to scratch his/her head and wonder how such a show could ever last one season, much least ten. However, when one delves deeper into the show, one discovers that it is one of the funniest, cleverest programs this side of Monty Python. Comedy scripts are arguably the hardest type of material to write and be consistently good. But the team that wrote MST, along with head writer Mike Nelson, created something that has lasted and is even more popular ten years after its cancellation.
I am putting together a book that looks at MST and its cultural implication, the Internet, and the creation of similar shows (Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic) which were created and are written by former MST people, who have kept the spirit of MST alive.

TL; DR
It would be interesting to do some research on the different ways that different fora organize discussions. The thing I love about LJ and have from the start is the threaded discussions. I've been thinking about this issue for a while this fall because eCollege, which our university is contracted to use, really SUCKS in its discussion programming (there are a million resources if you want to give quizzes or exams, but a good discussion--not possible). It threads, but if you click on ONE comment to read it, you lose everything else, and have to reclick. It's horrendously slow and clunky (well everything is in the program). I wish there was something better, especially for workshop classes which I tend to teach.

So tonight I was mousing around and found a post on Making Light about the best way to organize comments on a blog.

Warning: some of the ML post involves glancing references to Racefail 09, and I do respond to the references in my response. I am NOT in the least opposed to further discussion regarding RF09, especially the extent to which structures in online fora might affect communication and interaction, but anyone who responds should be aware that I am writing a paper on the topic. ETA: Nor am I in the least requiring further discussion regarding RF 09--the focus can be entirely on structures, commenting, examples you have known, etc./ETA

This post is not intended as a research-gathering tool for the paper, nor will I ever quote anybody from a Racefail discussion without permission, but my comments here are inevitably connected to the writing I'm doing elsewhere.

With that in mind, as always, feel free to respond to the statements and ideas below (including disagreeing with me or other commenters) although my LJ rule is that no personal attacks are allowed.*

And, please, let me emphasize: The MOAR threads the better!

*I do not consider identifying speeches or actions as racist to be a personal attack; the term "racist" describes deeply buried structures of thought and attitude (in the case of my racism, in the U.S.). The same applies to related terms like sexism, classism, ableism, etc.

This year, a chapter of Texas College Republicans formed on our campus; I am aware of them mostly through their posters (which are a lot glossier than any of the student orgs I've advised have ever been able to pay for). A recent poster for an event caught my eye, and it links to a larger (?) movement that I was not aware of before. I'd welcome any more links, contributions, examples, discussion. (Although I'm technically here for Grading Day).

POSTER:

I'm reproducing the text as exactly as I can--it's 17 inches wide, 11 high, with a blue line down the middle and text on both sides. The text is all caps, with the header and date/time/location information larger than the body text.

Left side (looking at the poster):

HISTORY HAS BEEN AS
PARTISAN AS CURRENT DAY AFRICAN-AMERICANS

The current demographic composition of the GOP
only contains a 2% African-American membership.
Latinos hover around 5-6%.

that most minorities hold--does voting conserva-
tively make you a bad minority, like so many are
taught?

Am quite liking AO3!

http://archiveofourown.org/users/Ithiliana/works

For the longer fics (coffcoff) which I occasionally write, I'm taking from my word documents (so I don't have to upload from umpty-dozen URLs in LJ) and dumping through the box that cleans out the junk and voila! It's easy to do. Will probably do a few more later this evening.

Now off to wake Entwife from nap and take dogs on walk.

(Because of the new folks down the road who let their SIX dogs run free, added to the two neighbor's down the road the other way whose dogs total about EIGHT, we now have to harness the dogs, load them in the car, and drive down to where our country road intersects with the farm to market road, and then cross the FM and walk on the county road on the other side, blissfully free of dogs. It's a bit of a pain for us, but oh, the dogs LOVE it--a DRIVE then WALKIES then ANOTHER DRIVE). Russell and I and Nougat (whose nickname is Juggernougat for the ten tons of PULL his 36 pound self exhibits) are in the backseat, and Pippin is in the front next to Entwife, encouraging her to RUN OVER THOSE DAMN NEIGHBOR DOGS in the road.)

Oh, and one thing I don't think I've noted before--we have wild turkeys in our area (sometimes we've seen up to thirty on the road). (I suspect they are hunted during the fall hunting season--we hear a lot of gunshots out here some times). But they are so beautiful: I didn't know what they were at first. Grey, and slim, with rainbow tints in the longer feathers--and very aggressive (none of our dogs have the least interest in charging them--they just sit down and watch with interest as they gobble and march and assert dominance over us puny primates and canines).

ETA: HA: OK this is embarassing. I just realized we're supposed to walk at 4 and it's only 3!

Goes back to uploading fic. Or maybe I'll take a nice hot shower....

Lotrips Freeform! TAGS and AO3

OTT Animation
http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Lotrips%20-%20Freeform

I am not worrying too much about the mechanics of tagging over there, but have just been playing around (that's how I tend to learn things). So today I decided to tag my BEHIND THE SCENES series which I'm posting with "lotrips" (even though there is a Lord of the Rings RPF fandom tag--simply because, well, I like lotrips). And Hope and Mira did it before me--but right now we're freeform! So you LOTRIPS writers, let's get cracking on using LOTRIPS!

Used "threesome" as well and am vastly amused to see that is not freeform (means not used enough to become um....official/convention, i.e. cannot be used to filter...yet?).

Jenna McWilliams blogging on danah boyd's Web 2.0 Expo Keynote Speech and the Twits in the Audience

I've not read the linked posts in detail, but heck, I'm avoiding work (university closed at noon, I'm still here, I thought I'd work, but hey, that's not working out so well).

Shortcut: boyd gave a keynote speech. Livestreamed Twitter backchannel feed broadcast behind her (where she could not read it). No moderation. Lots of snark from audience on feed and giggling as they read twits on her delivery and presentation. She admits she spoke too quickly, read from her notes, and struggled during the speech (haven't we all). She's blogged about it; others have, and McWilliams pulls together a number of posts and some of the twits heckling her, and a link to a video of her talk.

And while they may brag about being so hightech that they had backchannel ? Twitter livestreamed, they didn't let her use her laptop (HUH?) (OK, I still work with paper not laptop for my presentations, but I see a lot of laptop presenters.)

my first and off the top of my head response though probably not my last )
